We started out the day with two exciting semifinal games. The seniors vs sophomores semi-final game was a close one with touchdowns scored on the sophomore side by Kordelia Geissler and Molly Eaton and on the senior side by Melody Isham and Kendal Decora. After the second half was up, the two teams were still tied so they went into overtime, where senior running back Maria Halberg scored the game winning touchdown with a final score of 21-14.
On the other side of the field, the juniors were playing the freshman in their semifinal. Touchdowns were scored by Kaydence Poplin and Kendall Knight for the freshman, and by Harper Sheehan (2) and Danika Kortendick for the juniors. The juniors advanced to the finals to meet the seniors.
The two teams for the finals were the juniors and seniors. During the game, both Melody Isham and Maria Halberg had interceptions that they returned for touchdowns. None of the juniors scored, making the seniors (The Class of 2026) back to back powderpuff champions. Grace Schmidt, a senior, said her favorite part of powderpuff is the fun practices, plus the competition of the games on Wednesday.
This year, all of the shirts were designed, ordered, and printed by Ella Gerber and Charley Christian through The Storm, our school store. They spent a whole month working on this through their sports marketing class with Mrs. Ripley. Their efforts kept the cost lower this year, plus students got their last names on the back of their shirts! We are thankful for their hard work and time making this happen for students, and hope we can continue this tradition of creating our own shirts next year!
When students and staff were asked about their favorite and least favorite parts of the game, there were opinions all across the board. Most of the staff’s favorite part of the afternoon was being able to see the students have fun except for Mr. Dieckman, who decided to be different. Mr. Dieckman said had the most fun, “…roasting the players from the announcers booth.” Most seniors’ favorite part was winning the championship game of course. The Juniors favorite part was beating the freshman and spending time with each other. For the Sophomores it was another tough year on the powder puff field but their favorite part was the practices. The Freshman were excited for their first year of powerpuff, and beating the Sohomores.
We also asked students and staff if they had anything that they thought should be improved for future powderpuff games. A few things mentioned were having more people attend, being able to have coaches that aren’t football players, playing 11 girls instead of 7 so more people can participate, and to have music. Also Mr. Sande said he would recommend tennis shoes instead of dress shoes, a lesson that he learned the hard way this year.
We took a poll vote of the people who we interviewed, and asked if they would play again next year. 34 of the 36 people answered they would be participating in the powderpuff games again next year. Overall, the games were really fun and we are thankful for the teachers who helped to make it happen.
