The Art Club has been a part of Hayward High School for quite a while. It is led by Kelly Egger along with the presidents, Erin Ewert and Elizabeth Greenwald. The Art Club has done many fundraisers throughout the year to raise money for various activities, and plans to that give many students opportunities to branch out and find themselves along with their hobbies. The Art Club took a trip on March 8th to Duluth, going to a glass workshop and an art institute. Members of the Art Club tend to volunteer at nursing homes, paint murals, and help to bring joy to our community, also to help inspire others to express themselves through creative means.
Art Club runs multiple fundraisers throughout the year to pay for the expenses of our trips, one of the fundraisers is a root beer float fundraiser where people can pay $2 for a root beer float. Art Club members also help work the sports concessions at some home games. One of the yearly communal trips that Art Club takes is a canoeing trip down the Namekagon River. It is a fun day trip to enjoy the sun, repaint the bridge’s mural, and bring some brightness to the surrounding community. Mrs. Kelly Egger, the director of the Hayward Art Club, says she is planning for many fun activities on World Art Day, April 15th, like dressing fun and colorful for the day and other fun artsy crafts throughout the day. There will also be a Dairy Queen fundraiser to help increase the funds necessary for the trips. During the month of April, an art show will be occurring in the library, which will be showcasing multiple pieces of artwork created by Hayward High School art students.
Many of the members believe Art Club has helped them grow as a person and impacted their lives. One of the proud members, Katie Buchman, says, “I love Art Club. I think it has so many good opportunities for students to go make art and meet new people.” Co-president, Erin Ewert, says, “If you’re creative and want to do fun things for the community, then the Art Club is a good place for you.” Ewert continues to say that taking on a leadership role elevated her high school experience, and since she is organized, she likes to figure out what the Art Club can do and get everyone’s thoughts on things. She also says that the trips give her something to look forward to.
Through fundraisers and events, the Art Club offers room for many to grow, not just in an artistic setting. It allows many of its members to get involved with their community and learn valuable life skills, such as working with others and having good communication skills. Art club offers the opportunity for others to express themselves through creative and safe means, while also allowing many to make connections and friends that inspire and help their creativity to bloom.
