With the cold months approaching, it’s time for everyone to start preparing for winter sports. Coach Stark is excited for the season and recommends her skaters get ready for their season by getting moving! She stated, “Not all girls may be playing fall hockey, but others are participating in fall sports and other physical activities to get in shape for the season.” Girls are also going to open ice, and the girls’ hockey team even does a summer tournament. Leading up to the tournament, they have a week of contact days to prepare themselves. This is a great way for freshmen or new girls to meet the team and get a feel for the season. Zandra Land, a Hayward freshman, said she, “can’t wait to learn more about my teammates this year.”
The Hayward girls hockey team is a co-op, made up of girls from Hayward, Barron, Rice Lake, Spooner, Shell Lake, Ashland, Cumberland, and Siren. The girls from out of town have to make the drive to Hayward every weekday for practice. This season, many incoming freshmen are coming to play from all of our different towns. As out-of-town freshmen become seniors, our team does a ‘home game’ at their hometown rink.
This season, we have eight senior girls, two of whom are from out of town. We asked two senior girls what their goals were for their last season of HHS hockey. Gretchen Gajewski said, “I would love to make it to the sectional finals this year.” Greta Woelber said, “I want to go to the state championships.” These are some great goals for our team, and we hope to make these dreams come true on the ice this season!
