APUSH (Advanced Placement United States History) and D20 are two rigorous classes offered at the Hayward High School. APUSH is a college-level course and examination offered by the College Board as part of the Advanced Placement Program. You can receive college credit by passing the nationwide exam in May. APUSH is most known for how challenging it is, mainly due to the vast amount of context that covers over 400 years of U.S. History. Mr. Weber has been teaching APUSH for 18 years at HHS. He recommends this class to anyone looking to go to college. Mr. Weber stated, “It’s your first shot at a college class… open to any student that wants to give it a try.”
D20, or Development of the 20th Century, is a new class offered this year, and its purpose is to help prepare students for the APUSH exam. D20 highlights the importance of writing data-based questions (DBQ’s) and critical thinking. Mr. Dieckman, the teacher for D20, describes his class as, “APUSH with training wheels.” He explains that any Sophomore or Freshman interested in taking APUSH should take D20 as well. Anna Britton and Macie Reinke are both sophomores taking D20 and APUSH concurrently. Britton likes the class, and states “learning how to write DBQs is helpful for APUSH… I feel like it breaks down the material so we can connect the dots better.” Reinke is also glad to be in both classes as well, saying she feels it will help her do better on the APUSH test this Spring.
