A wrestler’s schedule, in general, is insanely strict with limiting eating, drinking, and movement. Following their strict schedule can make the wrestler’s life a little easier. You don’t have to worry about shedding weight when you’re a good 2-3 pounds over. Even though most tournaments allow a two-pound overlap, some can be more strict with one-pound. In order to learn more about this, here is an average day for an on-weight wrestler and an overweight wrestler.
An On-weight Wrestler
An on-weight wrestler from Hayward would wake up from 4:30-6:30 a.m., depending on where they live. When arriving to practice in the morning at 6:30, most wrestlers arrive at 6:15. The wrestlers walk into the school and go into the team locker. Then they take all their school stuff off and get changed into a T-shirt and shorts. The wrestlers practice from 6:30 to 7:30, and if wrestlers get done early, they spend their remaining time working on their technique for future duals and tournaments. Their schedule through school stays the same except for lunch; most wrestlers look out for what they are eating. If a wrestler consumes something horrible for their diet, they could gain weight, and depending on that food, it can be harder to shed that extra weight. That is why some wrestlers go to Kwik Trip for breakfast or lunch- to get more protein-based foods to fuel their bodies.
If there wasn’t a morning practice, there is usually an after-school practice instead. When there is a practice that takes place after school, the wrestlers head to the team locker room as soon as the bell rings. Wrestlers get their practice gear on and wait in the wrestling designated room until the coach is ready to start. When practice is done, some stay to do a little extra technique practicing, and others run laps to get their stamina up. After practice, they eat enough to stay on weight, even if they’re still hungry. Then it’s tough luck. Usually, wrestlers choose to eat more protein-based foods, with small amounts of what a regular normal diet needs. After they are done eating, they relax and get ready for bed. Wrestlers can follow a strict bedtime if they want, but most choose to go to bed around 9:00-11:00 p.m.
An Overweight Wrestler
An overweight wrestler would have an almost similar schedule, just a little more stress-induced because of the need to get on weight. The feeling of needing to get on weight will never leave a wrestler’s mind until they accomplish getting on weight. Waking up at 4:30-6:30 a.m., the wrestler arrives at practice knowing what they need to accomplish. After they get ready for practice, they wait in the wrestling room and do a few laps of jogging to get an early head start of sweating. When practice starts, the wrestler then works twice as hard as they usually do to burn more calories and lose more sweat. Once practice is over, with the time they have left. They decide to run or go on to the cardio machines to lose more weight. Once school starts, the schedule is the same. The wrestler chooses not to eat the normal breakfast and lunch that the school has to offer, they mostly just stick to the fruit.
If they still aren’t on weight, the wrestler might stay after school and run more. If there is practice, the wrestlers will work as hard as they can just to lose a few pounds. Once they’re done with running and they see that they’re on weight, the wrestler will usually choose not to eat. The wrestler might even refrain from drinking water for fear of going overweight and not being able to participate in a tournament or duals.
This is what an organized, strict wrestler’s schedule looks like. Full of self-discipline and control. A wrestler who lacks discipline will not achieve their goals and might even self-sabotage themselves to not wrestle in a tournament. When hearing this, you can remember all the same wrestlers participating in every dual match at home and away. There is no wrestler on Hayward’s wrestling team that is not disciplined.
