Quiz Bowl: a team that usually is not often talked about, but probably should be. Even though this activity is not a sporting event, that doesn’t mean it’s not a very lively and exciting thing.
The Quiz Bowl schedule is quite rigorous, spanning over thirteen matches, with many different competitors. A match consists of forty questions spanning over a wide range of knowledge. When it’s your team’s turn, you can either answer the question or pass it. Passing it causes no penalty but getting it wrong does. If passed, the question goes to the next team and with each question you only have fifteen seconds to respond.
The team is a collection of many different people with knowledge ranging over a very vast amount. This year’s roster looks a little different, as five seniors from last year’s team graduated. However, the team is really finding a groove with their new, younger roster. Some of this year’s members are Egan Young, Phoenix Rickards, Sona Ovezmyradova, and Brookelynne Master. Egan, who has been competing since his freshman year, is the group’s spokesperson as well as their geography buff. Phoenix is another prime player, with knowledge for any topic. Sona Ovexmyrandove, who happens to be a foreign exchange student from Turkmenistan, is the “ringer” for the team. Coach Karen Duffy stated, “She is a very knowledgeable person… We feel honored that she wants to be with us.” This is Brookelynne’s first year on the team, and she is excited to see how she can help the team win.
Does Quiz Bowl sound like something you’d enjoy? Well, Coach Duffy says, “the more the merrier!” If you’re interested in joining, she encourages you to come and talk with her, “my door is always open!” Quiz Bowl so far has a 2-0 record, and they’re excited to keep the win streak alive, and, as Mrs. Duffy always says, “Live the Hurricane way.”
