The Hayward boys soccer team has had a great season so far, winning against some very tough competitors. Hayward has competed against our rivalry team, Spooner, twice this year, winning both games. The Hurricanes have won many shut-outs as well, thanks to the play from their goalies, Charles Egger ( a junior who is also a kicker on the football team) and Sullivan Sportel (a freshman). In previous years, the team has been small and mostly with young players.
This year there are many more players than past seasons, which is always helpful since you need eleven players on the field. The team is lucky to have the play of four strong seniors: Wyatt Lobitz, Brode Beckwith, Noah Hill, and Raymond Hart. There are also a lot of underclassmen, especially freshmen, who will grow along with the program over the next few years. This year’s captains are Brode Beckwith, Teddy Winter, Noah Hill, and Wyatt Lobitz. The Hurricanes are coached by Jeremy Hill and Matthew Lobitz.
On the Thursday of Homecoming week, football was not the only team to compete this year. The soccer team played the Spooner Rails, and ended up with a win of 2-1. Raymond Hart scored both of Hayward’s goals. The Canes concluded their regular season on Thursday, October 17 against Washburn-Bayfield, which they lost with a score of 1-3. The Hurricanes first WIAA regional playoff game will be on the road against Osceola on Thursday, October 24th. Regardless of the outcome, the 2024 season has been the best season in recent memory, with an overall record of 8-6-3. Congratulations to all the boys on all their hard work and successes this season!
