This year, the girls golf team once again had an amazing season, earning a spot at the state tournament. The HHS varsity golf team this year consisted of Tara Eckes, Sofia Bonicatto, Lexie Sullivan, Emma Blinkwolt, and Macie Mavis. This year, the girls placed 2nd at regionals in Spooner, WI, advancing them to make their way to sectionals in Luck, WI. They played strong; Lexie shot her average while Tara and Sofia tied with a score of 88. Sofia ended up winning the tiebreaker with a handicap hole. They placed 2nd overall as well at sectionals, which took them to state.
The state meet was at the beautiful yet challenging University Ridge golf course. The meet lasted Monday and Tuesday, and they played 18 holes both days. Not only were the days long because of gameplay, but they were long because the weather wasn’t ideal. The high only got to 54 degrees, so it was pretty cold and very windy, making conditions pretty difficult. In addition to that, they played an 18 hole practice round on Sunday before their meet, so it was definitely a long few days. While all the golfers did well, Tara Eckes, a senior, shot an amazing score of an 87 the first day and a 75 the second day (which was one of the best D2 scores that day). Tara’s great score earned her an overall 3rd place medal, and helped her team take 5th overall! She said, I am proud of myself for getting third place this year, and more than proud of my team for taking 5th at state. I can not wait to see what the team does next year!” Tara said that what she liked most about the state meet this year was, “I loved riding in the Suburban with my team and coaches. We made so many good memories and had so many good laughs.” Tara will continue to play golf next year at Winona State University!
Sofia Bonicatto, the other senior on the golf team, also had a great second experience at the state golf meet. She stated, “I feel very accomplished to make it two years in a row, and am proud to make it with the team I did. For me, it’s not really about the golf when we go down there, it’s about spending time and making memories with the team. Big thanks to our coaches and their support, I couldn’t have done it without them. BIG SOS OUT!”
Congratulations on another amazing season!
