On a day when all Hayward hockey teams are playing at home, it’s known as Hayward Hockey Day. This year, the “Suicide Awareness Night” will take place during Hayward Hockey Day, to bring regards to the Suicide Awareness movement. With both of these events coinciding on January 10th, it’s important to come to the rink and show your support to not only Hayward hockey, but the movement itself.
The Suicide Awareness movement is organized by two student athletes: Charles Egger from the boy’s hockey team and Makenna Hutchison from the girl’s hockey team. Charles has organized it for two years while Makenna joined him this year. Makenna has organized posters, finalized game plans, and brought attention to it. Charles is in charge of organizing volunteers to run a 50/50 raffle to raise money for the cause. He also organizes the sale of t-shirts, which you can purchase for $10. All of the money made and donated on January 10th will be given to Sophie’s Squad, which is a nonprofit organization that provides education and awareness to improve the mental health of athletes.
Hayward Hockey Day has been a Hayward tradition for a long time. The youth teams love to be supported by the high school teams. Sometimes the high school boys will referee the young teams’ game, just to be out on the ice with them. During Hayward Hockey Day, there are a lot of events going on outside of the hockey games. There is a 50/50 raffle and Chuck-a-Duck that happens during the game, which is always a fun time. There are also prize packages that you can bid on to support the youth hockey development programs with expenses.
It is very exciting and rewarding to be a part of Hayward Hockey Day, as well as just being there for the community. The HHS girls varsity team will play Superior at 12:00 PM, and the HHS boys varsity team plays Eagle River at 3:00 PM. We hope to see you there supporting a great cause and all Hurricane hockey athletes.
