“It was incredible when I scored my 1,000th point,” said Lucas Hansen, senior Hurricane basketball player. On February 9th, on our home court against Cumberland, Hansen achieved this major career milestone. He was the seventh HHS boys basketball player to score 1,000 points. Hansen said he found out about being able to score 1,000 points in high school when he was in fifth grade, and ever since then, he had a goal of accomplishing that feat. Hansen said, “That is why when I finally reached my goal, it was so rewarding!” Hansen made it through his high school career with no serious injuries, which was very important for achieving this goal. He said staying healthy, developing his game, and having the ball go through the rim enough times was, “…a blessing from God.”
After years of playing basketball, Hansen never lost his love for the game. “I have always loved basketball, and have had a passion for it,” Hansen stated. Even though there were many times when it felt like the season was never going to end, and practices went by slower and slower, he was glad to be on the team. Hansen said, “It was hard to always keep my head up, I will admit, but my teammates kept me in the game.” He said that building a strong relationship with the team helped him find everyday joy in it. “The boys kept me in the game for sure.”
In addition to being a top point-scorer and rebounder (over 500 career rebounds!), he is also a team leader. Hansen stated, “I enjoy being able to guide other players on the team in the right direction… I always want to be the person that other kids will look up to.”
While leadership and achievement are both incredibly important to players, there are some other questions that the Lucas Hansen fans wanted to know the answers to. First question- would Lucas prefer to end a long game with a dunk or a three pointer. He said that he would choose a, “game winning three over a nasty dunk, especially if it is against a good team and we all played our hearts out during that game.” He said there is no better feeling than winning the game for your team. “It’s every kid’s dream!”
The second question was fashion-centered: white jerseys vs black jerseys? He answered, “I like the black jerseys a little better. The black and gold is pretty tough. It feels pretty sweet suiting up in the all black jerseys in my opinion.”
Congratulations to Lucas Hansen on his incredible HHS hoops career! We’ll miss seeing you on the court next year.
