Ice fishing is a very popular sport during the winter season, especially in the northern area of Wisconsin. There are many great lakes around us to visit and try your skills at a completely different approach to fishing. Over Christmas break, there is likely to be an increase in the number of people ice fishing.
Just this past weekend, we took a trip out to the Tiger Cat Flowage, and we measured the ice to be 5 1/2 inches thick. Of course, we didn’t catch anything. This is because senior Nathan Lindsay had the great idea to fish right behind his house. If you know Nate, you know that you won’t catch much, if anything, if you go fishing with him when he is the guide. However, in the future, we plan to visit other lakes this season, without Nate being the guide; of course, he will still be there for the fun though.
We decided to interview some people about their experiences and plans for ice fishing this year. We first asked junior Samuel Roach about his thoughts on ice fishing this year. Sam’s response, “Yeah, it’s alright.”
We asked sophomore Joey Bergschnieder the same question, and his response is as follows: “I might go out this year.”
Senior student Troy Isham told us that, “Yeah, I like ice fishing. I think it’s fun. As long as we have a tent though.” Another senior, Eve DePew, says that she likes ice fishing and will maybe go out this year.
We asked Nathan (previously mentioned) what his thoughts were on this ice fishing season. He said, “Oh yeah, I love ice fishing. I plan to go with Shane, Austin, Troy, and Charles. I want to go out on Round, Lost Land, and Spider. I plan to go out this weekend, now that you mention it.”
So overall, we got mixed responses from students on their opinions on ice fishing. It’s going to be a great season, and we hope everyone stays safe and catches a lot of fish. We encourage those of you who have never ice fished to go out and try it.
