How did the Hayward sports teams get the nickname of the “Hurricanes” even though we don’t actually get hurricanes in Wisconsin? The real reason for this is because back in 1945-46, the only sports team Hayward had was a high school boys basketball team. They needed a nickname, and because they were so dominant, and it seemed like they were destroying everything in their path. Well, few things are as destructive as a hurricane, so the name “Hurricanes” stuck. Plus something about the “Hayward Hurricanes” sounds nice- must be that alliteration thing English teachers are always talking about.
While the nickname makes sense in that regard, there has never been a recorded hurricane ever in the history of Hayward’s existence! I feel like some good names would be the Hayward Muskies, since the world record musky was caught here. Another choice could be the Lumberjacks because we host the Lumberjack World Championships. While both of those ideas, perhaps, make more sense, there’s something kind of fun about being the only Hurricanes in Wisconsin… Now we just need a mascot in costume to attend our games!
