All Quiet on the Western Front is an anti-war film (based on the novel by Erich Maria Remarque) that takes place three years into World War I. The main character the film follows is Paul Bäumer, a newly recruited soldier who had enlisted with his friends. Paul and his friend are optimistic about how being in the war will be and how they will be heroes once the war ends, but are quickly exposed to how horrible the conditions are for people on the frontlines.
This 2022 movie was directed by Edward Berger, had a budget of $20 million, and won a very large number of awards. It was regarded as the most awarded non-English film in Oscar history. The film was rated an average of 8.1 by Rotten Tomatoes. This film, being an anti-war film, mostly focused on the German war machine, putting focus on how the German army continues to chug along regardless of how brutal and immoral it is. One of the ways this is shown in the film is how the outfit Paul receives at the beginning of the film is actually an outfit recovered by a Kia Germany soldier, resewn and put back together so that Paul can use it. Once Paul is KIA, it will go through the same process and be given to someone else. The film is an extremely well put-together material and is very good at showing the theme through visuals and music. If you haven’t seen the film yet or would like to view it again, it’s on Netflix right now.
